Most of what we were taught about ADHD was written about children who could not sit still.
The clients arriving in your practice are rarely that. They are adults who have spent thirty years compensating and are exhausted by it. They are teenagers whose school reports say capable but not applying himself. They are people who were told for years that they were lazy, difficult or too sensitive, and who half believe it.
What looks like avoidance is often executive function. What looks like overreaction is often rejection sensitivity. What looks like resistance in the room is often a nervous system doing exactly what it has learned to do.
This four day certificate is about seeing that clearly, and knowing what to do differently once you can.
About the training
Now running for the second time, this is a research informed certificate covering child, adolescent and adult work, delivered live online across two weekends.
It is co taught, and deliberately so. Leo brings adult ADHD practice and lived neurodivergent experience. James brings adolescent and family work. Between the two, the course follows ADHD across the lifespan rather than treating adult and adolescent presentations as separate subjects.
24 IACP approved CPD hours.
What we will explore
Days one and two, with Leo
The history and evolution of how ADHD has been understood, and where that leaves clients today. Adult risk factors and co occurring difficulties. Executive functioning, including strengths as well as differences. Whether one therapeutic approach fits better than another, and the honest answer to that question. The role of values in the work.
Then: executive functioning and the challenges it creates in therapy itself. Coping and self regulation. Emotions and emotional intensity. Rejection sensitivity dysphoria. Self concept and shame. Burnout and self care, for the client and for you.
Days three and four, with James
ADHD through a developmental lens. Adolescent brain development and executive functioning. Regulation and co regulation, and what that asks of the therapist. Emotional dysregulation and impulsivity in adolescence. Rejection sensitivity and shame in young people.
Family systems and ADHD: parent and adolescent dynamics, communication, misattunement, and supporting parents to co regulate and reframe behaviour rather than manage it.
Then: the adolescent inside the wider system of school, peers and home. Risk and comorbidity, including anxiety, depression, self harm and substance use. Intersectionality, gender and identity in ADHD, including work with neurodivergent LGBTQ+ young people. Integrating mindfulness, regulation and relational repair.

What participants said about the 2026 cohort
"The course structure was very informative and balanced between theoretical understanding and lived experience. I have no doubt the learning from this course will be carried through into my work with my clients."
"It deepened my understanding of ADHD and helped me think more compassionately and practically about supporting individuals who live with it. I liked that it looked at ADHD from both the adolescent and adult experience."
"The facilitators created a safe, non judgmental space for participants to engage and learn. I definitely feel more confident and skilled to support ADHDers after participating in this course."
